Protest planned Friday at Capitol as frustration mounts over California’s stay-at-home orders

As California Gov. Gavin Newsom continues to fight coronavirus spread through orders limiting public movements and closing some state beaches, push back is growing from various quarters seeking a reopening of churches, business and public gatherings.

A week after the California Highway Patrol banned public protests at the state Capitol and other state properties, a demonstration is expected at noon Friday around the downtown Sacramento building by people demanding the state reopen despite the threat from COVID-19.

The group, calling itself Re-Open California, End the Lockdown,” says on its Facebook page that protesters will make “their voices heard while remaining safely inside their vehicles.”

“Californians will gather for a peaceful in-vehicle protest, circling the State Capitol in Sacramento, California — calling for the re-opening of the Golden State,” the group said in an online post. “Millions of California families are currently struggling to figure out how they will put food

Kids likely don’t play ‘significant role’ in passing coronavirus to adults, report says

Early data on the demographics of COVID-19 cases have indicated children are less likely to be affected by the virus. Until recently, most experts assumed they were asymptomatic carriers.

Not quite, a new report has found.

“The role of children in transmission is unclear, but it seems likely they do not play a significant role,” a new report based on a compilation of pediatric studies concluded.

Don’t Forget The Bubbles — a blog for medical professionals specializing in pediatrics — partnered with the UK Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health to track and review studies on COVID-19 in children, according to its website. Using research from 78 of those studies, it released a 45-page report on April 22 that extracts early findings on the epidemiology, transmission and symptoms of the coronavirus in children.

The report concedes, however, that much of the evidence “is of low quality” due to the

Building blocks of an early warning system for the next pandemic: Analysis

Building blocks of an early warning system for the next pandemic: Analysis

America’s national defense is anchored by NORAD — the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Its job is the “detection, validation, and warning of attack” against America and Canada by any kind of air- or sea-borne weapon or force.

The COVID crisis has shown we need an “outbreak NORAD” to detect, validate and warn of incoming pathogens that have the potential to attack North America and the whole world.

Searching for vaccines and treatments while a pandemic rages is obviously too little, too late. An aggressive early warning system would help deploy resources aimed at knocking down outbreaks before they can spread into epidemics or pandemics.

How US COVID-19 fatalities compare to worst flu seasons

How US COVID-19 fatalities compare to worst flu seasons

Deaths in the United States from the novel coronavirus topped more than 62,000 Thursday, making it deadlier than any flu season since 1967, according to data compiled by Reuters.

The only deadlier flu seasons were in 1967 when about 100,000 Americans died, 1957 when 116,000 died and the Spanish flu of 1918 when 675,000 died, according to the CDC.

The United States has the world’s highest coronavirus death toll; so far more than 1,079,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have occurred in the U.S., with 62,603 deaths, while 127,950 people have recovered, according to the latest statistics Thursday night.

Repurposed for COVID-19, antiviral drug offers hope at two South Florida hospitals

Repurposed for COVID-19, antiviral drug offers hope at two South Florida hospitals

For more than a week, doctors at two South Florida hospitals have been administering a closely watched antiviral, remdesivir, and studying the effects it has for treating COVID-19. Fewer than 20 patients in South Florida have received the drug so far.

On Wednesday, the prospects became more encouraging for the medicine, developed by California-based Gilead Sciences initially to treat Ebola virus, when the early results from a clinical trial were made public. The trial, funded by the National Institutes of Health, showed that people who received the drug recovered quicker and died at a lower rate.

In South Florida, the drug has been used, under conditions set by the company, for six patients at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and nine patients at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.

Jackson Health System, Miami’s public hospital, said it was recently approved for the program but hasn’t received the medication yet.

Netherlands eases coronavirus lockdown by allowing children to exercise

Netherlands eases coronavirus lockdown by allowing children to exercise

The Netherlands has eased some coronavirus lockdown restrictions, allowing children to exercise again.

From Wednesday, children aged 12 and under will be allowed to exercise outdoors together without any distance restrictions but they must be supervised.

Teenagers can also organise outdoor sports and games together but must stay 1.5 metres apart at all times.

No competitions are allowed, and children and young people must shower once they return home, new guidance issued by the Dutch government states.

Elite athletes are also allowed to train at designated training locations if they keep a distance of 1.5 metres from each other and take all hygiene measures.

Primary schools, including special primary schools, nurseries and childminders will all be able to open their doors on 11 May.

Pupils will attend primary school part time, with class sizes halved, while children enrolled at special schools can return full time.

Secondary schools have been advised

The latest obstacle in the search for a coronavirus treatment: Too many drug trials

The latest obstacle in the search for a coronavirus treatment: Too many drug trials

Similar problems hampered the hunt for promising Ebola treatments five years ago, during the historic West Africa epidemic. The National Institutes of Health was forced to scuttle a trial of a promising therapy, known as ZMapp, after the outbreak’s decline made it impossible to find enough trial participants. It wasn’t until 2019 — during another Ebola outbreak — that a trial revealed ZMapp was ineffective.

Trial designers carefully calculate how many patients must be recruited to ensure that results will be statistically significant. The most rigorous trials also involve a control group: participants who do not receive the drug or vaccine being tested, to allow comparisons with participants who do. Carrying out these studies during a pandemic requires frontline medical workers to collect detailed data at regular intervals, adding to their workload at a time when many hospitals are stretched thin.

The “old-fashioned approach of going one investigator at a

WW And High Fitness Dance Workouts Helped Me Lose 137 Lbs.

My name is Ashley Tappana (@ww_ashwantssmallerpants). I’m from Salt Lake City, Utah, but I currently live in Fort Worth, Texas. I’m 37 and a stay-at-home mom of four children. After steadily gaining weight over 11 years and through four pregnancies, I decided to lose weight for good.

I never really struggled with my weight until I got married. Then, the weight slowly started creeping up on me. Before I knew it, my pants didn’t fit. So I bought the next size up…and before I knew it, those didn’t fit anymore either. Pretty soon, I was having to shop in the plus-size section.

I hated going shopping with my friends. Most of the stores my friends shopped at didn’t carry my size, and I’d just stand there awkwardly looking at all the cute clothes surrounding me, knowing they’d never fit. I was the fat friend, and I felt so much embarrassment
