Former England international and fitness expert fears for health of Championship players due to short-notice return

Former England international and fitness expert fears for health of Championship players due to short-notice return

Former Wolves fitness guru Tony Daley believes Championship players are being rushed back to action too quickly.

The ex-England international, who spent a decade at Molineux as the club’s head of sports science and conditioning, is wary of the timeframe to restart the competition.

The English Football League announced on Sunday that the league is due to resume on 20 June after it was halted in March by the coronavirus pandemic.

Clubs were angry after not all were consulted, with QPR boss Mark Warburton insisting the plan puts players’ safety at risk.

Out-of-contract Charlton stars Lyle Taylor and Chris Solly, along with Birmingham loanee David Davis, will not play for the Addicks due to fears they will get injured and ruin summer moves, and Daley feels returning so quickly is a gamble.

“It’s definitely a week, minimum, too early to come back,” he told the PA news agency

“Players will

England spinner Bess says running helps with virus anxiety issues

London (AFP) – England off-spinner Dom Bess believes maintaining physical fitness has helped him cope with anxiety issues caused by the coronavirus lockdown.

“Getting out running and fit always gets me in a positive mindset and having a bit of structure,” said Bess, in a Zoom conversation with former Somerset team-mate Marcus Trescothick, whose own mental health issues cut short his England career.

“I know how it affects me,” added Bess, who first spoke about his mental health problems in an interview last month.

“I always call them triggers. Even little things like the weather.

“There’s times where it’s been really bad and I really struggle to get out of bed and the motivation is not there any more.

“I struggle with that quite a lot and getting going is always the hardest part for me, certainly in this lockdown.

“There’s been little triggers but I’m fortunate enough to have

England players among footballers using mental health services during coronavirus crisis

The Football Association has provided mental health support for England players amid a surge in depression and anxiety among female players during the coronavirus crisis.

Telegraph Sport understands that meetings have also been held with clubs, to discuss players’ mental wellbeing.  Additionally, from next season, regulations will insist that Women’s Super League clubs must demonstrate that they have a mental health and wellbeing strategy, including a referral pathway and clinical psychological support.

The news comes after a survey by the global players’ union, Fifpro, found that the number of female footballers reporting symptoms of depression has doubled since the sport shut down. A study by the organisation in December and January — when football was still active in most locations globally — indicated that 11 per cent of women players reported symptoms characteristic of depression, a number that has since risen to 22 per cent. Eighteen per cent of the

England skipper Root still in training despite virus

London (AFP) – There may be no training nets for them to attend right now but England captains Joe Root and Heather Knight are still following personalised programmes even though no one knows when they will play cricket again.

Last week the England and Wales Cricket Board announced a seven-week delay to the start of the 2020 season

The County Championship, which comprises four-day first-class matches, was due to start on April 12.

And although England’s Test series at home to the West Indies is not meant to commence until June 4 this may not begin on time either now with the ECB saying on Tuesday there “is uncertainty surrounding when, or if, the domestic and international summer will start”.

But each of England’s centrally contracted men’s and women’s players have been given an individualised training programme.

Test skipper Root, recently returned from a tour of Sri Lanka that was
