Coronavirus death toll passes 40,000 in the UK

The number of people in the UK who have lost their lives to coronavirus has now passed 40,000, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics.

But the true death toll could be much higher, as the number of excess deaths between mid-March and May 8 has topped 54,000 in the UK.

Tuesday’s ONS figures show that 39,071 deaths involving Covid-19 had occurred in England and Wales up to May 8 and had been registered up to May 16.

When figures from Scotland and Northern Ireland are added, a total of 42,856 deaths have been registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, including suspected cases.

Mobile County Passes Jefferson County For Most Coronavirus Cases

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The state of Alabama has seen five straight days with fewer coronavirus cases reported, but in Mobile County, the news has not been quite as positive. Mobile County passed Jefferson County as the county with the most confirmed cases of the virus.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Mobile County had 710 confirmed bases, 15 more than Jefferson County. The most populated county in the state, Jefferson had been the state’s leader in cases since the middle of March.

The counties with the most coronavirus cases as of Tuesday afternoon:

  • Mobile County: 710 confirmed cases; 3,906 total tests, 36 reported deaths

  • Jefferson County: 695 confirmed cases; 9,094 total tests; 26 reported deaths

Southern Europe is buckling under the strain of the coronavirus pandemic, with patients filling the wards of hospitals in Spain and Italy as the global death toll passed 10,000 people.

The World Health Organisation noted the dramatic speed of the virus’s spread, saying: “It took over three months to reach the first 10,000 confirmed cases, and only 12 days to reach the next 100,000.”

The WHO released new protocols to help countries identify the extent of Covid-19 infection among their populations, which age groups are most affected and the percentage of people who are infected without symptoms.
